Hulu is an American streaming content service owned by The Walt Disney Company. The streaming platform was launched on 0ctober 29, 2007 and it started as a platform for recently-aired TV shows. The streaming service has since grown into a massive service that offers a library of movies, television series from networks such as FX, ABS, CBS, or NBC, as well as original content, and Live TV options. Hulu is currently available in the United States.

How does Hulu work?

Hulu allows its users to stream from various screens. Users have up to six profiles per account. Each profile is separate, with unique recommendations based on the profile user’s history. Kis can also have their own profiles, restricting their usage to kid-friendly content.

Hulu provides its users with a legal platform to stream their favorite movies and TV shows. The streaming service has deals with content providers, which allows Hulu to publish content from their networks. As a result, Hulu has content from media giants such as Disney, Showtime, Fox, CBS, TLC, FX, Freeform, BBC America, Complex, Animal Planet, ABC News, and much more. The platform also has original content that is only available on Hulu.

Streaming content from Hulu isn’t free. Before you can access content from the platform, you must first purchase a plan. Some of the content isn’t available in the default plan, but can be added at an additional cost. The platform also provides the option of doing away with ads, but at an additional fee as well.

Hulu Plans

Hulu has four base plans to choose from. All of these plans give you access to Hulu’s full library of movies and TV shows.

You can subscribe to the Standard Hulu plan with or without ads. The Standard Hulu plan with ads is available for $5.99 per month. The Standard plan with no ads is available for a monthly fee of $11.99.

The Hulu Live TV plan costs more than the standard plan but includes more content. The Hulu Live TV plan resembles a traditional cable subscription. This plan provides live and on-demand channels covering sports, news, movies, lifestyle, entertainment, as well as kid-friendly content. The content varies depending on your location. The Hulu Live TV plan also has an ad-free option.

The Hulu Live TV plan with ads costs $54.99 per month. The Hulu Live TV plan with no ads costs $60.99 per month.

With the Hulu Live TV plan, there are several add-ons available for an additional monthly fee. This plan allows you to choose extra networks and features, including Showtime, HBO, Cinemax, STARZ, Spanish live streams, as well as enhanced cloud DVR, which allows you to store more hours of video. You also get the option to pay for unlimited screens, which will allow you to stream from more devices at home.

In addition, Hulu gives its users the option to bundle their Hulu subscription with other services. For instance, if you sign up for the Disney Plus bundle, not only will you get access to Disney Plus but also Hulu and ESPN+.

How to create a Hulu account

Creating a Hulu account is easy. All new Hulu users get a free trial before committing to a monthly plan. Depending on the subscription plan you choose, you can get up to one month free at no cost. If you do not cancel your Hulu subscription by the end of the free trial period, you will be billed.

To create a Hulu account:

  • Visit Hulu’s Choose Your Plan page.
  • Identify the plan you want and then click the SELECT button under the plan
  • Fill out the form and then select Continue to create your Hulu account
  • Enter your payment details and then press SUBMIT. Alternatively, you can click the EXPRESS OPTIONS tab to pay with PayPal.

What is the streaming limit on Hulu?

Hulu allows its users to stream on more than one device at once, on a single account. However, the limit on how many devices you can stream simultaneously depends on your subscription package and add-ons.

Hulu allows you to activate your account on an unlimited number of devices. However, you can only stream from two devices simultaneously. This means that if you try to actively stream on more than two devices at the same time using the same account, you will encounter an error message.

Hulu, however, has an option that makes it possible to stream simultaneously on more screens. The streaming service offers an Unlimited Screen Add-on for Live TV subscribers. This add-on comes at an additional cost of $9.99 per month. The catch is that all of these devices must be connected to your home network. If you want to connect from a different network, you will be limited to three device streams.

It is important to note that the Unlimited Screen Add-on is only available on Hulu Live TV subscriptions. If you are subscribed to the standard plans, you’ll need to upgrade to Hulu Live TV subscriptions in order to access the Unlimited Screen Add-on option.

If you pay for premium network add-ons, the streaming limit increases. For instance, if you subscribe to HBO Max, SHOWTIME, STARZ, or Cinemax through Hulu, you can simultaneously stream content from these networks on up to five screens from your home network. If you want to connect from a different network, you will be limited to three device streams.

Can I Share My Hulu Account?

Hulu allows you to have up to 6 profiles per account. Each profile is separate, providing each user with unique recommendations based on their viewing history. If someone has your Hulu account credentials, they can log in and use any profile they want to stream content.

To add a Hulu profile to your account:

  • Log in to your Hulu account
  • Hover over the dropdown menu in the top-right corner
  • Click on Manage Profiles
  • Select Profiles and then click on Edit Profiles
  • Click Add Profile
  • Enter the profile details and select Create Profile to confirm

How to use your Hulu account offline

While Hulu does not allow you to stream on more than two devices simultaneously on a standard account, it is possible to watch Hulu’s content by downloading videos to watch offline. Watching Hulu’s content offline doesn’t limit you to two screens.

To be able to do this, you’ll need to be subscribed to the Standard Hulu plan with no ads, or the Hulu Live TV plan with no ads. You also need to have a supported mobile device. You won’t be able to access downloadable content with the Standard Hulu plan with ads.

It is also important to note that not all Hulu content is downloadable. However, the streaming service has a search filter that makes it easy to find downloadable movies and TV shows.

To download content on Hulu:

  • Log in to Hulu on your mobile device
  • Tap the search bar and select Downloadable
  • Browse the available downloadable titles
  • Tap the Download icon to save the video for offline viewing

Although watching Hulu’s content offline doesn’t limit you to two screens, there are still restrictions in place for downloaded content:

  • Users are limited to a maximum of 25 downloads on 5 supported devices
  • Unwatched downloads expire after 30 days
  • Once you start watching a downloaded title, you have 48 hours to finish watching before the title expires. However, you can always renew the expired content by downloading it again.

Can you kick someone off of Hulu?

Since Hulu is quite restrictive when it comes to simultaneous streams, you may find yourself unable to use your account when too many people are streaming at the same time. This is possible, even with the Unlimited Screen Ad-on feature. This is quite annoying, and in some instances, you may not know who else is using your account. Fortunately, Hulu has made it possible to kick someone off Hulu. There are few ways that make this possible.

One way is to remove individual devices from your account. To do this;

  • Go to Account
  • Select Manage Devices to display a list of devices that have been used to log into your Hulu account
  • Click REMOVE next to the device to remove it from your account

The other alternative is to log all devices out of your account. This option is useful if someone you don’t know has your login credentials. To do this;

  • Go to Account
  • Click on Privacy and Settings
  • Select Protect Your Account
  • Click Log Out Of All Devices to confirm

In this situation, be sure to change your password if you need to keep someone from accessing your Hulu account in future.

How to use Hulu Parental Controls

Hulu has parental controls that you can set up to limit the types of content your kids can see. When you create a kids profile on Hulu, you can restrict your kids from accessing R-rated content. Parental control settings on Hulu apply to all devices, including mobile phones and tablets, web browsers, and smart TVs.

How do Hulu Parental Controls work?

Hulu allows you to create separate profiles for each user who watches on your account. As you set up the profiles, there is the option of making a profile a kids profile. A kids profile is limited to family-friendly movies and TV shows. Shows rated R or TV-MA don’t show up in a Hulu kids profile.

To set up a Hulu kids profile that is restricted to kid-friendly content:

  • Log in to your Hulu account
  • Hover over the dropdown menu in the top-right corner
  • Click on Manage Profiles
  • Select Profiles and then click on Edit Profiles
  • Click Add Profile
  • Enter the profile details
  • Select the toggle switch under Kids and set it to the On position
  • Select Create Profile to confirm

The next time you log in, Hulu will ask you who’s watching. When you select a kids profile, Hulu won’t recommend adult content, nor will adult content show up when you search.

Limitations of Hulu Parental Controls

Hulu’s parental controls aren’t as extensive as the parental controls on Netflix. For instance, you won’t be able to block specific movies or TV shows. Also, it is not possible to limit access to PG, or TV-Y content only. As such, your kids can still watch PG-13 and TV-14 rated content.

What is Hulu Live TV?

Hulu Live TV is an extension of Hulu’s streaming service. Hulu Live TV allows you to stream live television. Hulu with Live TV allows you to access a massive library of on-demand content. All you need is fast reliable internet and a compatible streaming device. Hulu Live TV allows you to watch live television on your smartphone or tablet, your computer, smart TV, or any other compatible device.

How to sign up for Hulu Live TV

Choosing a Hulu Live TV Plan

Hulu has two plans with Live TV. Both of these plans come with the same basic channels, and most of the features are the same. The main difference between the two Liv TV plans is that one, apart from adding live television to your Hulu subscription, removes commercials from nearly all of the on-demand content on the site.

The Hulu Live TV plans are:

  • Hulu Live TV, which allows you to access more than 50 live television channels, as well as access to Hulu’s entire on-demand library through their limited commercials plan.
  • Hulu Live TV with no commercials, which also gives you access to more than 50 live television channels, as well as access to Hulu’s entire on-demand library via their no commercials plan.

It is important to note that the availability of channels varies depending on your physical location.

Hulu Live TV Add-Ons and special features

As mentioned earlier, both plans of Hulu Live TV give you access to more than 50 live television channels. In addition, Hulu Live TV comes with a digital video recorder (DVR) feature. There is also the option to pay extra to be able to access more channels and features.

Some of the important add-ons, special features, and extra channel packages you can add to your Hulu Live TV subscription include:

  • Enhanced Cloud DVR. This special feature drastically increases the amount of content that you can save to your cloud DVR. It also enables you to skip commercials when watching recorded content.
  • Unlimited Screens. This feature removes the limit on how many streams you can watch simultaneously. While the normal limit is two screens, this feature allows you to stream simultaneously on an unlimited number of devices, provided the devices are using your home network. If you are using different networks, you can stream simultaneously on up to three devices.
  • Showtime: This adds up to eight live Showtime channels, depending on your location. This channel package also includes access to the full library of on-demand Showtime content.
  • Cinemax: This adds up to seven live Cinemax channels. The package includes access to on-demand Cinemax content.
  • HBO: This adds up to seven live HBO channels and gives you access to HBO NOW for on-demand HBO content.

Does Hulu Live TV offer a DVR?

Hulu Live TV comes with a cloud DVR feature. Cloud DVR allows you to record live shows and watch them later. The saved content is stored in the cloud. As such, you don’t have to worry about the recordings filling up the storage on your streaming device. You can also watch the recordings on any of your other devices, not just the one you recorded on.

The default cloud DVR included with Hulu Live TV offers a limited amount of storage. Also, the commercials cannot be skipped on both plans. If you want to skip through commercials and record more hours of live television, you can upgrade to the enhanced cloud DVR feature.

Can you rent movies from Hulu?

No, you cannot rent or buy movies and TV shows from Hulu. The streaming service offers a large library of on-demand movies and TV shows. The platform’s cloud DVR feature also allows you to record movies to watch later.
